Pupal Cues Increase Sperm Production but Not Testis Size in an Insect

چکیده
Theoretic and empirical studies show that social surroundings experienced by male insects during their larval or adult stage can influence testicular investment in diverse ways. Although insect pupae do not feed crawl, they communicate using sex-specific and/or non-sex specific cues. Yet, it is unknown, any insect, whether how fine-tune resource allocation to sperm production testis size response socio-sexual environments. We investigated this question a moth, Ephestia kuehniella, which produces fertile eupyrene unfertile apyrene sperm. held individually groups with different sex ratios, dissected adults upon eclosion, measured size, counted both types of demonstrated after exposure conspecific pupal cues regardless sex, increased eupyrenes apyrenes at the same rate but kept unchanged. suggest fixed pupation because most morphological traits are formed stage, allowing little room for adjust size. Like adults, fully grown testes have sufficient resources produce more according perceived increase competition risk.

Relative testis size and sperm morphometry across mammals: no evidence for an association between sperm competition and sperm length.
Understanding why there is extensive variation in sperm form and function across taxa has been a challenge because sperm are specialized cells operating at a microscopic level in a complex environment. This comparative study collates published data to determine whether the evolution of sperm morphometry (sperm total length and separate component dimensions) is associated with sperm competition ...
متن کاملCarotenoid supplementation during adulthood, but not development, decreases testis size in mallards.
Nutritional constraints on reproduction are well-characterized in female animals, but rarely have particular nutrients been linked to male reproductive investments. Carotenoid pigments promote egg-laying and fertility in several animals, and are displayed externally within secondary sex traits by males of many colorful species to attract mates, but it is unclear if or how carotenoids affect mal...
متن کاملSperm competition and maternal effects differentially influence testis and sperm size in Callosobruchus maculatus.
The evolutionary factors affecting testis size are well documented, with sperm competition being of major importance. However, the factors affecting sperm length are not well understood; there are no clear theoretical predictions and the empirical evidence is inconsistent. Recently, maternal effects have been implicated in sperm length variation, a finding that may offer insights into its evolu...
متن کاملDietary antioxidant supplementation did not affect declining sperm function with age in the mouse but did increase head abnormalities and reduced sperm production.
The present study aims to ascertain whether dietary administration of a mixture of vitamins C and E may prevent the negative effects of paternal age on male fertility variables in the mouse. Experimental males were fed a standard diet supplemented with either a low or high dose of vitamins C and E. Oocytes enclosed in cumulus masses were inseminated using a 2 x 2 factorial design established ac...
متن کاملUnconscious reward cues increase invested effort, but do not change speed-accuracy tradeoffs.
While both conscious and unconscious reward cues enhance effort to work on a task, previous research also suggests that conscious rewards may additionally affect speed-accuracy tradeoffs. Based on this idea, two experiments explored whether reward cues that are presented above (supraliminal) or below (subliminal) the threshold of conscious awareness affect such tradeoffs differently. In a speed...
